I’ve always told my children that before they were born, they were with Jesus. Then Jesus gave them to us to care for and love. And someday Jesus will want them back. I tell them that Heaven is better than anything they can imagine – better than Chuck E. Cheeses or a candy store. My youngest (who is 4) said, “I don’t want to die, Mommy”. I got quiet and asked, “Why”? Her response was, “I can’t imagine anything better than this!”. My 8 yrs old and 7 yr old chimed in, explaining it much better than I could have. “I know it’s hard to imagine, but Jesus tells us it is so it must be great”.

Not sure if I did the conversation justice, but it is so wonderful to have our faith to put into true perspective the issue of death. Without faith, I’m not certain how people make sense of these conversations with their children.

Thanks, Mary. Thank you also for your amazing book – I’ve gifted it to several people and they have enjoyed it very much.

I love the little exchanges we have at the most unexpected times. My college philosophy professor once told me that 3-year-olds are highly philosophical; this after I told him when I was 3, I used to wonder, while I was awake, whether I was in fact dreaming and only thinking I was awake. 🙂 Anyway, I agree completely with your approach, Mary, and have had similar conversations with my kids MANY times. Thanks for the affirmation!
