THANK YOU! As one who was raised Catholic and now merges that sacred upbringing with a Yogic lifestyle i cannot tell you how “validated” your article left me feeling. The very definition of Yoga is UNION. Yoga does not have an agenda about with Whom we unite, that is our personal journey. Yoga does, however, serve as a bridge to carry us to the “ONE to Whom every THAT belongs” (Rumi). Yoga is NOT a religion. It is a Science. And what a blessing that the Lord has given us another way hOMe!

I just had to laugh when I found out who wrote the article. I know Fr. Ezra and pray for him daily. He was a member of my parish before entering the Dominicans. We love when he comes home for a visit. I love both of you.

Hi Marie,
It seems to be a constant problem — and frustration. People can be so fearful. I’ve been on yoga retreat with Paulist Father Tom Ryan, who is a trained Kripalu yoga instructor. Here’s a website that might be helpful, Christians Practicing Yoga: http://christianspracticingyoga.com

I’ve been battling this attitude with some people at my church. I don’t know where it all came from but I was taken aback. Many priests lead yoga retreats.

He needs to get a copy of Christian Yoga by J.M. Dechanet, a Benedictine who was also a practicing yogi before it became popular to do yoga. Father Dechanet writes clearly about the many benefits yoga has given to him, one of which is enabling him to sit for longer periods of prayer. Hardly “satanic” results.
