Things like this just leave me shaking my head. I just don’t understand how — under any circumstances — this kind of response would be considered acceptable. Our Church’s loss. Unfortunately, your relative’s experience is all too common. I’ve seen it happen in my own family. It’s really sad.

Since they were not, at the time, regular church-goers, they were told that they should register at the church and, if they attended regularly for the next year, their daughter could be baptized. Instead, they looked for a church that was a little more welcoming, and now are very active in their local Episcopal parish.

It is time we started to rethink how to invite people back into the church. I believe it is here at the sacraments. Instead of making them jump through every hoop, those that shut the doors should be doing the hoop jumping.

As soon as I read this homily, I frantically started posting because I needed to share it. This pope is such a gift to our Church, such a gift to my own faith journey!
