The young nurse thing stunned me deeply partly because she was engaged. The deserted young man is known to no one and is a bit player in the Merton story that we forget about like we forget the woman Augustine dismissed after a decade and a son yet he found another mistress …or like the love child Merton had pre conversion. The non famous, forgotten people within larger biographies….they should have their own name…the forgotten… like martyrs have a name for their group.
But yes with all that, his early works were good. Think of Solomon who was wise and then fell greatly in the using women department…and according to Augustine of all people, does not seem to have returned to God.

Later, as a young adult I read everything of his that I could and was always inspired. He and writers like him probably contributed to my staying a committed Catholic. Thanks for this post.
