{"id":13841,"date":"2024-03-18T09:46:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T13:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/notstrictlyspiritual.com\/?p=13841"},"modified":"2024-03-18T09:46:05","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T13:46:05","slug":"the-one-who-rights-all-wrongs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/notstrictlyspiritual.com\/give-us-this-day\/the-one-who-rights-all-wrongs\/","title":{"rendered":"The One Who Rights All Wrongs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My reflection on <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/daily-bible-reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today&#8217;s Scripture readings<\/a> in the March issue of Give Us This Day:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-\u2014-roman---no-indent--PLS\">At some point or another, most of us have been blamed for something we didn\u2019t do. It doesn\u2019t feel good, and sometimes it can be downright scary. Whenever I read a story of someone released from prison after having served decades for a crime they did not commit, I am astounded by their joy, their gratitude, and I often imagine how I might respond in a similarly horrific situation. I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d be quite so gracious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-\u2014-roman---no-indent--PLS\">To be able to withstand the unthinkable and maintain an unshakable trust in God, as we witness Susanna doing in today\u2019s first reading, requires not blind faith but an abiding faith in the One who rights all wrongs, even when from an earthly standpoint, justice is not done. In our Gospel, we see a variation on the same theme. This time the woman in question appears to be guilty, and the laws of that time required justice of the harshest kind. Instead, Jesus offers mercy, compassion, tenderness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-\u2014-roman\">Both women are spared\u2014the innocent and the guilty. How does that make us feel? Is there a place in our lives where we expect mercy for a wrong we\u2019ve committed, even when we will not offer the same to others? Is there a place where we have been wronged and hope for punishment to be meted out to satisfy our desire for justice? As it turns out, \u201cjustice\u201d looks different through the lens of the Gospel.
